End your tattoo licence
Your licence or permit may end for a number of reasons, such as:
- it expires
- you choose to surrender the licence
- we cancel or suspend the licence.
You may not transfer your licence or permit to another person for any reason.
Surrendering your licence
You must contact us in writing to surrender your licence. You will need to:
- immediately return your licence documents to us
- keep your tattoo procedures log for at least 3 years after the end of the calendar year.
The licence will be invalid from the day you surrender it.
You can lodge your written notice and surrendered licence with the Office of Fair Trading at the address below, at one of our regional offices or at a Queensland Government service centre.

Suspending or cancelling a licence
All licence holders
We may suspend or cancel your licence if you:
- give us false or misleading information in your application
- disobey a provision of the Tattoo Industry Act 2013
- disobey the conditions on your licence.
Tattoo operator licence holders
We may cancel your tattoo operator licence if you are disqualified from holding:
- a personal appearance services licence (from your local council)
- any other occupational licence (such as a motor dealer licence)
- a weapons licence (or permit).
This also applies if you had any of these licences suspended, cancelled or revoked.
We will also cancel your licence if:
- a court bans you from working in any type of personal appearance service because of public health violations
- we issue a closure order against your licensed premises
- your corporation goes into administration
- a state or federal authority (such as a court) makes a winding-up order against your corporation
- you are convicted of a prescribed offence under the Act.
Information notice
We will send you an information notice if we suspend or cancel your licence.
The information notice will:
- explain why we suspended or cancelled your licence
- give you a chance to give a written response (within 14 business days)
- state the cancellation period.
The decision takes effect on which ever happens latest:
- the date stated in the notice
or - the date you receive the notice.
If you disagree, you may apply to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal for a review.
